So it begins. The Dallas Stars made their first move of the off season placing Aaron Rome on unconditional ($125) waivers for the purposes of enacting a buyout. The buyout period started at 12.01AM this morning and Aaron Rome was the only player placed on waivers.
The Stars are using one of their two compliance buyouts following the lockout to buyout the last year of Aaron Rome’s three year contract. By using the compliance buyout his contract doesn’t count towards the Stars cap hit.
It was first reported by Bob McKenzie earlier today on Twitter that the Stars had placed him on waivers.

There are regular buyouts (count against cap) and compliance buyouts (not counted against cap). Rome’s buyout in DAL is a compliance buyout.

This opens up a space on the Stars blueline that had been looking increasingly crowded. The Stars have plenty of young defensive prospects in Cedar Park who are pushing for ice time in Dallas.

Aaron Rome only played 25 games this year with the Dallas Stars and had a single assist and a minus six rating. He was more often than not a healthy scratch. He also did an eight game conditioning stint with the Texas Stars in the AHL and also only had a single assist.
