2017 NHL Entry Draft: Dallas Stars Select Goaltender Jake Oettinger 26th Overall

After nabbing the best defenseman in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, Miro Heiskanen, with the 3rd overall pick, the Dallas Stars grabbed the best goaltender in the draft as well, selecting Jake Oettinger at 26th overall.

The Stars previously held the 29th overall pick, but traded it alongside the 70th overall selection to the Chicago Blackhawks for this pick.

Oettinger is a 6’4” goaltender with an incredible track record of success so far in his career. He played for the prestigious USA Hockey National Team Development Program from 2014-16, before moving up to Boston University in the NCAA this past season. It was there that he put up a 21-11-3 record and a .927 save percentage.

His technique and form are incredibly advanced for a goalie his age, and he has a calm, cool, and collected composure that allows him to handle high-pressure situations. His large size naturally covers up a lot of net, and he rounds out his game by having quick reflexes and a fantastic ability to track the play.

We wrote a more detailed profile on Oettinger earlier this month, which can be found here.

The Stars signed free agent Ben Bishop this summer as their goalie of the present, and now with Oettinger in the fold as well, they also have their goalie of the future.
