OHL
The Ontario Hockey League has got it’s season underway and the Dallas Stars prospects have been playing their first games. Jason Dickinson is the lastest Stars prospect to be sent back to the OHL, the rest have been playing in the past week. Dickinson was reassigned on Sunday.
Remi Elie played two games in the past week and finished with three points through both of them. The Belleville Bulls came out of the gates strong beating 2013/14 OHL champions, Guelph Storm, 6-0. Elie got a goal and an assist in the effort. He assisted on Jordan Subban’s goal to open the scoring and he would later score on the powerplay.
In their 2-1 win against Sudbury on Saturday he would get the assist on the tying goal half way through the first period. Elie has been in the starting lineup for the Bulls for both of their two games.
It was also announced on Sunday afternoon that Remi Elie had signed a three year entry level contract with the Dallas Stars. He will be eligible to turn professional and join the AHL at the end of this season.
Aaron Haydon went pointless through the Niagara IceDogs’ two games this week. They lost both games, 3-1 against Sudbury and 3-2 against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. I wasn’t able to watch any of his games and there don’t appear to be any highlights of the games as I write this. His only mark on the statsheet was a pair of minor penalties, one in each game.
Brent Moran, despite backstopping Niagara to two losses, received a lot of praise from the runner of the IceDogs official twitter account. He finished with a collective .907SVS% and let in five goals on 54 shots.
Alex Peters had two assists through two games for the Plymouth Whalers. Peters, who is captain of the Whalers, got his pair of assists in their 5-0 shutout of the London Knights. He would finish a collective plus three for the game.
Peters would finish pointless in their 5-4OT loss to the Erie Otters. He had been on the ice for three of the Otters four powerplay goal but only finished a minus one.
Patrick Sanvido and the Windsor Spitfires would also be on the end of the Otters offensive prowess. Sanvido, who wears an A for the Spitfires, would finish a minus two. The Spitfires would also lose their game on Sunday, 2-1 to the Guelph Storm. Sanvido went pointless in the contest and finished an even plus minus.
WHL
In the WHL Brett Pollock played his first WHL games after being assigned to the Oil Kings after a stint at the Dallas Stars training camp.
He had a goal and an assist in the two games he played since his return. He got both in the Oil Kings 5-1 win over the Swift Current Broncos on Friday. He would also have a plus three in the game. He was named the first star of the game.
Pollock would finish pointless in a 2-1 against the Medicine Hat Tigers and finish with a minus one rating. He was on the ice for a shorthanded goal scored by Markus Eisenschmid.
Cole Ully continued his point scoring, adding another four in two games for the Kamloops Blazers. He would have a goal and an assist in an 8-2 win against the Victoria Royals on Friday where he was named second star of the game. His goal would be a the 8th Blazers goal of the night and was a shorthanded goal.
He would add another goal to his overall total in a 4-3OT loss to the Royals on the Saturday night. He would score on the powerplay and would have six shots on goal. He was named third star of the game.
QMJHL
Philippe Desrosiers has only played one game since his return to the Rimouski Oceanic. He would let four goals in during a 6-4 win over Drummondville. There aren’t any highlights of this game so I’m not sure whether the performance was due to his team or his own play. Nevertheless the 0.818SVS% isn’t pretty on his first game back in the QMJHL.
USHL
Matej Paulovic has had three points in the opening two games of the Muskegon Lumberjack’s season. He had two assists against Team USA in a 5-2 win and had a single assist during a 4-3 win against the Madison Capitals.
Europe
Sweden
It’s been a disappointing week to follow Ludwig Bystrom in Sweden. He’s been a healthy scratch in both of Farjestad’s games this week. I’ve not yet found an explanation for the healthy scratch. He however has been loaned to Timra in the Allsvenska for the next week. He is expected to play in their three games. Here is the HockeyAllsvenskan piece on the move.
John Nyberg, however, continues to be the seventh defenseman for Frolunda. His icetime has decreased over the past week and he’s only been playing just over three minutes per game. His callup is due to injury so unless he forces his way up the lineup it might soon be better for him to be playing the J20.
I was able to watch parts of the game when he played and I was able to draw some quick, albeit small sample size, observations about him. He is quite clearly a step or two slower than most of those playing at the SHL level. But there was one play in particular which made me think that his hockey IQ is there.
He got the puck past an onrushing forward and attempted to speed around to get the rush going as he entered the neutral zone. His slow skating however allowed the forward to adjust and it resulted in an impressive hit which sent Nyberg flying.
Both Niklas Hansson and Emil Molin went pointless in Rogle’s two games this week. In the first game of the week, a 4-3 loss, Emil Molin played on the top line and Hansson on the top defensive pairing. They would play just under 12 minutes and just under 19 minutes respectively.
Despite being assigned to the third pairing during Friday 4-3 win Hansson played 21 minutes and Emil Molin, as the extra forward, played just over 9 minutes.
Finland
Esa Lindell had an impressive week with a goal and an assist over two games. He would have an assist in a 4-1 win over Sport on Friday. I was able to watch part of the game and he was very impressive. He is responsible in his own end and aggressive in the offensive zone. He helped his team score a goal by drawing two players to him as he rushed to crash the net. Highlights of that game can be found here. Lindell played just under 23 minutes in the game.
He would get his goal during a 3-2 win against Ilves and highlights of the game can be found here. Lindell played over 25 minutes in this game. His goal would come from getting a rebound in front of the net. His mishandling of the puck earlier in the game however would lead to the second goal for Ilves.
Aleksi Makela played in both of the games the LeKi played this week. He would go pointless through both of them and averaged just under 19 minutes of ice time per game. He has played all of their games on their second defensive pairing this season but has yet to register a point.
Miro Karjalainen has not played in either of HIFK J20’s games this week.
Russia
In the past two games Dmitry Sinitsyn has been playing over twenty minutes per game. He had a single assist in a 4-3 loss on Friday and went pointless in a 3-2SO loss on Sunday. He’s been either top or second in terms of ice time in both of those games. It seems that Sinitsyn could be playing the amount he needs to in order to develop further.
