Colton Point Signs Three-Year Deal With Dallas Stars

One of the Dallas Stars’ best college prospects has just signed his first contract with the team, as GM Jim Nill announced a three-year ELC for goalie Colton Point.

The North Bay, Ontario native won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championships in January. As backup to established starter Carter Hart, Point earned a shutout in his tournament debut, stopping all 20 shots in a 6-0 victory over Slovakia.

But Point’s performance at the World Juniors is just part of his story this past season. The 2016 fifth-round pick was selected as the 2017-2018 Colgate Student-Athlete of the Year – posting a 1.74 goals-against average and six shutouts in 33 appearances for the Colgate University Raiders, along with a 16-12-5 record.

His .944 save percentage set a school record and ranked first among all NCAA goaltenders on the season, as well as tying the mark for ninth-best in NCAA men’s hockey history. A three-time ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week, Point made the top-10 list for the 2018 Hobey Baker Award, honoring college hockey’s most valuable player.

It may be too early to say, but Point is shaping up to be the Stars’ next big win from the Jamie Benn Round. It should be a lot of fun for Texas fans to watch his development from the much closer vantage point of Austin Metro.
