The Dallas Stars announced their training camp roster this morning. After looking through the players included on their announcement, we’ve categorized them to give everyone a basis from which to evaluate players based on their likely destination this season:
As shown, the Stars are one player over the 23-man roster limit (if Martin Hanzal is healthy), likely meaning that some tough decisions are coming among the bottom six forwards here (such as Remi Elie, Jason Dickinson, Gemel Smith, and Devin Shore) whether it’s sooner or later in the season.
However, if bottom six roster spots are up for grabs, that means that someone such as a Roope Hintz, who impressed last training camp, could come in and solidify their spot on the NHL roster.
After all, this team has a whole new coaching staff with Jim Montgomery and company. What schemes he wants to put into place and how players fit into it will likely dictate some of those roster decisions.
The Stars will be in Boise for training camp Friday, September 14th through Sunday, September 16th. The schedule of activities for those three days is as follows, with all times listed in Mountain time and all on-ice sessions conducted at CenturyLink Arena:
Friday, Sept. 14
(Audience: Media only – closed to the public)
9 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. – On-Ice Session One
10:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. – On-Ice Session Two
Noon – 1:15 p.m. – On-Ice Session Three
Saturday, Sept. 15
(Audience: Open to Idaho Steelheads season ticket holders and guests from select area hotels)
9 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. – On-Ice Session One
10:30 a.m. – 11:45 p.m. – On-Ice Session Two
Noon – 1:15 p.m. – On-Ice Session Three
Sunday, Sept. 16
(Audience: Scrimmage ticket holders)
11 a.m. – Victory Green vs. White Scrimmage
What’s most interesting about this training camp is the fact that it’s closed to the general public for most of the on-ice sessions. That’s a new development considering how the Stars have held all on-ice sessions as free to the public during the past few training camps in Fort Worth and Cedar Park.

This likely means that this year, more than ever, Stars fans will have to tune into the likes of Sean Shapiro, Mark Stepenski, Mike Heika, and Defending Big D to get commentary of the on-ice sessions. We’ll be there and hopefully will be bringing you content on our Twitter page and maybe even some Facebook Live options, so make sure you’re following along with us on those mediums. As always, we’ll have training camp content here but it won’t be as “real-time” — and you won’t be able to ask us how a specific player looks until after the sessions are over, unlike asking as the sessions occur.
