Joseph Cecconi is a big defenseman at 6-foot-two and 205 pounds. He’s quite under the radar because he doesn’t make a lot of flashy plays but he makes a lot of safe and well thought out plays to make sure his team is in a better position.

He knows how to use his body effectively and can plaster opponents along the boards. He’s very strong defensively and uses his size to clear out the crease.

Skating wise scouts are pretty divided. Some say he isn’t particularly great, he can be used to help push defenders back when he joins the rush alongside the puck carrier. His skating means that he often finds it hard to track back with players that beat him wide. Others say that he’s a fluid skater and has good mobility.

Which one of these is true I imagine we will find out in time.

He is a very calm player and knows where he needs to put the puck and generally doesn’t make a careless mistake. His defensive game, despite question marks over his skating, is generally pretty good. Cecconi has a good shot but he isn’t projected to be a big point getter at the next level.

He’ll likely be a physical, defensive defenseman who can provide help on the penalty kill. If he could develop a bigger offensive game while in the NCAA that’ll be a big bonus.

He is committed to the University of Michigan for next season.
