Friday the 13th Links: Stars Hope To Build Off Win Against Red Wings

Dallas got the all important 1st goal against the Red Wings last night, but then had a conga line to the sin bin and a turnover that led to a goal had them down 2-1 at the end of first period.

In the 2nd the Stars got 2 goals in 40 seconds from John Klingberg and Stephen Johns to break the 2-2 tie. Patrick Eaves empty net goal sealed the 5-2 win.

We won in Los Angeles last week (6-4), and I think a lot of those goals were a credit to getting people to the net and pucks to the net,” said Brett Ritchie, “but we got away from it in Anaheim, so that was an emphasis tonight. We wanted to make it hard on the goalie, and it worked for us tonight.

Johns returned to the lineup after being a healthy scratch the past 3 games. He was in Coach Lindy Ruffs doghouse with his delay of penalty versus the Canadiens that led to a goal. Now he is trying his best to be consistent to stay in the lineup. (Wrong Side of the Red Line)

Winnipeg’s goalie situation is a mess right now. Opening Night starter Ondrej Pavelec is playing across the hall for the Jets AHL franchise the Manitoba Moose. Connor Hellebuyck and Michael Hutchinson have both been inconsistent. should they make a trade for a starter or bring Pavelec back up. (Sportsnet)

Traditionally, the fourth line in the NHL has been the domain of the enforcer, the battering ram, the “energy guy”. It’s a line, hockey thinking says, that you send out when you want an opposition team physically punished, whether that be with a fight or by being introduced to the glass hard and often.  Teams like Boston and Columbus are changing thoughts on the 4th line.

What Boston are doing here is the template for a fourth line in the new NHL – being a productive offensive line while also managing to be an incredibly effective shutdown line.
