The Dallas Stars announced earlier today that forward Matej Stransky signed a one-year, two-way deal. Stransky, the Stars’ 6th round pick from the 2011 draft, was a restricted free agent after the expiration of his entry level contract. Stransky ranked second on the Texas Stars in power play goals (8) and ranked second in goal scoring on the squad with 23 goals last season.
After his two first seasons at the AHL level were marked by inconsistent play, Stransky found a role in the Texas Stars lineup last season. He played on both the power play and the penalty kill, and has established himself as a capable two-way player.
There are concerns about Stransky’s skating capability, which could potentially keep him from being more than a bubble player in the organization. The upcoming year, combined with the term of contract, seems to indicate a time of evaluation for the Stars to determine whether Stransky will take a next step in development or whether he’s likely to remain a depth prospect.
However, Stransky was greatly improved last season. Another strong showing on special teams in the AHL and a good training camp should go a long way to establishing Stransky as a potential bottom six forward for the Dallas Stars moving forward.
