News out of Frisco this morning, via ESPN Dallas, is that the Dallas Stars have re-signed two of their top players in Cedar Park for the Texas Stars in Travis Morin and Colton Sceviour. Both are said to be one year, two way deals.
Morin, 27, had a wonderful year for Texas last season as he tallies 21 goals and 24 assists in 80 games played and was selected as a starter to AHL’s Western Conference All-Star team, though he could not participate because he was with the Dallas Stars at the time in February when injury trouble struck the hardest. He went scoreless in those three games for Dallas and registered two shots on goal in limited ice time.
At the age of 27 it’s unlikely that Morin is part of the “future” of the Dallas Stars, but is a solid depth guy and someone who might be relied upon for future call-ups. Plus, they love him at the Cedar Park Center.
At just 22 years of age, Colton Sceviour is a slightly different story and his stock is still rising. In just his second professional season the 2007 4th round draft pick scored 16 goals and 25 assists in 77 games with Texas last season and saw a brief call up to Dallas in February for his first NHL game, a loss in Philadelphia.
As a right shot, there could be a place in the Stars organization for Sceviour if his development takes another significant stride this season, and he’s someone we’ll keep an eye on in camp and pre-season this fall for any (pleasant) surprises.
I expect that Sceviour will be one of the first call players for the NHL club this season as he continues to grow and mature as a professional. Morin has the potential to be the same, depending on camp. He will definitely help to be a quality depth player in the minors for Dallas.
Other Texas players with expiring contracts include UFAs Trevor Ludwig, Ray Sawada, and Aaron Gagnon; RFAs Guillaume Monast, Richard Bachman, and Sean Backman; and all AHL-only contract players.

Frisco, Tex. – The Dallas Stars announced today that the club has agreed to terms with center Travis Morin on a two-year, two-way contract ($525,000 at the NHL level; $125,000 at the minor league level; with a minimum guarantee of $150,000 each year), putting him under contract through the 2012-13 season. Right wing Colton Sceviour has agreed to a one-year, two way contract ($525,000; $75,000).
Morin, 26, appeared in 64 games with the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League (AHL) last season, ranking second on the club in points with 45 (21 goals, 24 assists). He also led the club in scoring during the playoffs with seven points (3g, 4a). Morin made his NHL debut in 2010-11 with Dallas after dressing in three games and recording two shots.
The Brooklyn Park, Minn., native skated in 80 games with the Texas Stars in 2009-10, tying the club lead in assists (31) and totaling 52 points. Morin helped Texas reach the Calder Cup finals in the spring of 2010, posting four goals and 12 assists in 24 games. The 6-2, 195-pound center was originally drafted in the ninth round (263rd overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by Washington.
Sceviour, 22, skated in 77 games last season for the Texas Stars, ranking third on the club in points with 41 (16g, 25a). He also skated in six games for Texas during the AHL playoffs, scoring one goal. The Red Deer, Alb., native made his NHL debut with Dallas on Feb. 5, 2011, at Philadelphia.
The 6-0, 201-pound right wing helped the Texas Stars reach the Calder Cup Finals in the club’s inaugural season in 2009-10. Sceviour skated in 80 games, tallying 31 points (9g, 22a), during the regular season and 24 contests, accruing eight points (1g, 7a), during the playoffs. He was selected by Dallas in the fourth round (112nd overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
