Dallas Stars Prospect Update: Swedish Prospects Have Strong Starts

With regular seasons in Europe beginning this last week this is the first prospect update of the season.

North American Juniors and NCAA

The OHL season doesn’t begin until Thursday this week.

The NCAA won’t begin until the start of October.

Europe

Sweden

John Nyberg began the season in the SHL after spending last year in the Allsvenskan (the Swedish second division). He returned to action with Frolunda and played in their opening game of the season.

He finished pointless in the only game that he played this week and averaged just over 11 minutes of ice time with Frolunda.

The Dallas Stars third round pick in 2016, Fredrik Karlstrom, had a strong start to the season in the Allsvenskan with AIK.

He scored a goal in each of his first two games in the year. Karlstrom had a goal during a 3-1 win against Vasterviks IK on Thursday.

On Saturday Karlstrom scored his second goal of the year in a 4-3 loss to Sodertalje. He helped a last ditch effort to tie the game with an equal strength goal in the last ten minutes of the game. They’d lose the game with a last minute goal with three minutes left.

Dallas Stars seventh round pick, Jakob Stenqvist, had a very good start in the Swedish juniors. He had four points, all assists, in the first four games of the season.

He had a primary assist in a 3-2 loss to Leksand on Friday and was the first player for MODO J20 to take a shootout attempt. He missed his attempt.

Stenqvist would add another pair of assists during a 4-1 win against Mora on Sunday.

Finland

Liiga

Aleksi Makela began the season in the Liiga. He played a pair of games with Assat and finished pointless. Makela left Ilves during the off season and joined Assat.

Roope Hintz is currently injured and did not play this week.

Miro Karjalainen is playing for the Stars at the Traverse City Prospect Tournament.

Markus Ruusu has played three games in the Mestis with the JYP Academy. He finished with a 0.933SVS% over those games. I haven’t been able to find any more details about how he performed in those games.
