Dallas Stars Prospect Update: Niklas Hansson Has Bright Start For New SHL Club

So it begins again. The European leagues have been in action for a week or two and the Canadian Major Juniors are geared up to start their seasons in the coming week.

We’ll be giving you weekly updates on how the Dallas Stars prospects have played in the past week across North America and Europe.

North American Juniors and NCAA

The OHL and WHL are due to start their regular season in the next week. For the first time for years the Dallas Stars will not have any prospects in the QMJHL.

The Dallas Stars NCAA prospects, Michael Prapavessis and Joseph Cecconi, will not start until the first week of October. Prapavessis will be playing for the RPI Engineers and Cecconi for the Michigan Wolverines.

Europe

Sweden

There are a couple of prospects currently at training camp who I think could end up being assigned either to the Texas Stars or back to clubs in Sweden. Mattias Janmark could return to Frolunda whilst I think both Emil Molin and Mattias Backman’s contracts in Sweden are up and so will be playing in North America next year.

Janmark has played for Frolunda during the Champions Hockey League so he will stay on this list until officially assigned to the Texas Stars.

Niklas Hansson had a pretty good start with his new team HV71. He had a pair of assists in the two games he’s played so far. He’s playing on their top defensive pairing and averaging over 20 minutes per game.

John Nyberg has been put on loan from Frolunda to Oskarshamn in the Allsvenska. Frolunda is a stacked team so decided to loan the defenseman to another team, most likely for the entire season. Playing with one team might bring some stability to Nyberg who was bounced around teams last year.

He did play a few games with Oskarshamn last season so he knows the club.

Statistically it doesn’t look like Nyberg has done much with Oskarshamn but he’s been playing on the top defensive pairing for Oskarshamn. His -5 is partially explained by a brutal 7-1 loss where he finished a -3 after apparently playing 33 minutes in the game.

Finland

Roope Hintz is out injured and has not yet played for HIFK this season.

Aleksi Makela is playing limited minutes for Ilves, playing one of their regular season games and registering only 8 minutes of ice time.

Miro Karjalainen is playing in the Jr A SM-Liiga for HIFK J20. He’s had a single assist through two games this season. He has also racked up 52 penalty minutes, including a pair of 20 minute penalties. He got one in each game.

The Dallas Stars have two goalie prospects in Finland this year. Henri Kiviaho returns to the Liiga after his year in North America. He’s the back up for Ilves but hasn’t played yet this season.

The other, Markus Ruusu, one of the Stars picks in 2015, is the back up for JYP-Akatemia in the Finnish second division (Mestis). He has yet to play either.

Russia

After suffering an injury that prevented him from playing the first games of the season, Denis Gurynov is back playing in Russia.

He played one game in the MHL before returning to the KHL. He has yet to score his first point this season in the KHL and has averaged 10 minutes per game over four games.

Dmitry Sinitsyn has not played at all, either in the KHL of the Russian second division, VHL. It is not entirely clear why this is the case.
