Vernon Fiddler was personally impacted by cancer at a young age, and he has worked to fight against it ever since:
The retired Stars player still does a lot of work with the Dallas Stars Foundation, and his charity of choice is the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Fiddler’s sister Erin died of leukemia at age 8 when Vern was just 4, and he has used his platform as an NHL player to help raise funds to battle against blood cancer during a career that spanned 15 years and ended last September.
Fiddler was a fan favorite for each team he played for throughout his career- not because he put up huge numbers, but because he worked incredibly hard and was a great teammate. His work ethic hasn’t wavered since he retired from the game, and his former teammates continue to appreciate his effort:
“He worked his butt off as a player, and he worked his butt off here,” Turco said. “I don’t think he wanted the attention so much as he wanted to use whatever he could to raise the money. It was a cool ride, and it was fun to watch him share it with others.”

Stars Stuff
I don’t pretend to be an expert on minor league hockey coaches, but all indications are that this would be a very good hire:
Not finalized yet, but Stars are close to a deal to bring in Grand Rapids Griffins coach Todd Nelson as an assistant on Jim Montgomery’s staff.

There will be another couple of hires before the offseason is done:
Stars still have two coaching hires left to make after Nelson hire. Another assistant coach and another video coach to work with Kelly Forbes.

Sean Shapiro went back to the lab to break down Denis Gurianov:

Stanley Cup update:
The Capitals evened things up against the Golden Knights with a 3-2 victory. Brooks Orpik scored a goal, which was weird. [NHL]
Pierre LeBrun wrote about the Golden Knights and their nickname:

Tom Wilson sure has provided a lot of content to the hockey writers of the world this postseason:
