Dallas Stars Daily Links: The Seguin Heist

Saturday marked the fifth anniversary of the trade that brought Tyler Seguin to Dallas (which kind of blows my mind). I was a huge Loui Eriksson guy, so I was slightly devastated at the time, but realized that the Dallas Stars were bringing in an incredibly young, incredibly talented player who had gotten a bad rap in Boston mostly because of the insane media scrutiny there. Time has proven that Dallas robbed Boston in this transaction:

In four years, the four players Boston got in the Seguin trade combined to score 102 goals and notch 150 assists — good for 252 points.

In that same amount of time, Seguin alone had 133 goals and 173 assists — good for 306 points. That’s insane.

Seguin has also excelled against his former team. One of the best memories of last season for Stars fans came against the Boston Bruins, when Seguin somehow faked out the entire Bruins’ line and buried the most patient wrister in overtime to give the Stars the win. Here are some things that the Boston media has said since the trade:

— “Only two-plus seasons in, trading Tyler Seguin looks like a horrible mistake. The Dallas superstar, who is still only 23, could have 10-plus more years to compound the pain of a regrettable deal.”

— “Seguin was a good player before the trade. He’s become special after it.”

— “The scary thing is that Seguin is still improving. His best years are yet to come. They’ll be as good as he wants them to be.”

Now let’s all hope and pray that Jim Nill can convince No. 91 to stay in Dallas for the foreseeable future. See more from Joshua Friemel here.

The Stars signed Gemel Smith to a one-year, $720k,000 contract on Friday. The battle for the fourth line will be very interesting come training camp time. [NHL]

Around the League

Weekend deals (some big names and dollar amounts were involved in the last couple days):

  • Mark Stone is getting just over $7 million to stay with the Ottawa Senators for a year. [NHL]
  • Cody Ceci, whose name is 37.5% C’s, was awarded a one-year, $4.3 million deal in arbitration to stay with the Senators as well. [NHL]
  • John Gibson inked an eight-year deal reportedly worth around $51 million total to stay with the Anaheim Ducks. [NHL]
  • William “Wild Bill” Karlsson got a one-year, $5.25 million prove-it deal from the Vegas Golden Knights. [NHL]
  • Troy Brouwer’s down year (six goals, 16 assists) with Calgary last season led to him being bought out by the Calgary Flames. [NHL]/

David Satriano took a crack at ranking the top 20 centers in the NHL. Obviously, Stars fans would want Seguin higher, but I really have no bones to pick here overall. However, I was slightly surprised to see Ryan Getzlaf on the list, and even more surprised to learn he was over one PPG last season, and then absolutely blown away to find out that he’s only 33 years of age.
