The Dallas Stars made magic happen for a young heart patient and his team on Wednesday afternoon. But they seem to have saved nothing for last night. The Victory Green gang lost yet again, this time to former first-round prospect Jack Campbell and a suffering Los Angeles Kings squad.
Stars senior staff writer Mike Heika writes that the Stars have received “pretty much every form of motivation” already. Maybe now they need to remember that this game is fun, just like the Minnesota Twins did in Little Big League:
“Maybe the problem is you guys forgot how much fun this is,” [12-year-old GM Billy] Heywood said in a pivotal scene of the 1994 film where he inherits the baseball team from his grandpa and then names himself manager. “You’re major leaguers. I mean, you’re on baseball cards. What could be better?.”…
If only the Stars could have that kind of moment this season. If only they had a reminder of just how lucky they are.
And if only this were a kids’ movie, the team might have some assurance of a happy ending. Instead, they endured an evening in which an authentic superstar, Alexander Radulov, ended up riding pine for lackluster play:
The organization feels the time to win is now. It made a move to get Andrew Cogliano in hopes of bringing in more speed and more veteran savvy. Pundits and fans speculated that the trade of popular young forward Devin Shore to the Ducks would provide another message – another subtle motivation to the players that they need to be better.
And it sure looks like it didn’t work.
Mike has more. [Dallas Stars]

Tyler Seguin wants to see some harder defense as part of a simplified game:
And Monty just wants the team to play with more desperation:
Around The League(s)
#Murder Party
- The St. Louis Blues looked tired and careless in a 5-2 loss to the Boston Bruins, which also brought G Tuukka Rask to within one victory of a franchise record. [St. Louis Game Time]
- The New York Rangers scored three unaswered goals as the Chicago Blackhawks lost their fifth straight game, 4-3. [Second City Hockey]
- In Central-on-Central violence, Brendan Lemieux scored twice as the Winnipeg Jets strafed the Nashville Predators, 5-1. [On The Forecheck]
- And with three goals in the first eight minutes, the Anaheim Ducks got back into the win column with a 3-0 shutout of the Minnesota Wild. [Hockey Wilderness]/
You knew it would happen eventually, and the Calgary Flames have decided not to make their fans wait. They’ll retire Jarome Iginla’s number 12 in March.
UP TO THE RAFTERS: The #Flames announce that they will retire the #12 of the club’s all-time leading scorer, Jarome Iginla, on March 2.
Iginla played 1,219 games with the club from 1996 to 2013, reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 2004.

The Nino Niederreiter – Victor Rask trade made big news yesterday afternoon, largely for the wrong reasons.
The Hurricanes and Wild made a trade today. I don’t get it for the Wild. Even if there is another move to be made I still don’t get it for the Wild. https://t.co/1MhmWAwXKs |@NHLonNBCSports

Numbers guy Corey Sznajder went straight to the #fancystats.
Victor Rask traded for Nino Niederreiter straight up. Rask is very good at getting the puck through the neutral zone and has trouble translating it into anything. Nino is more of a shooter. pic.twitter.com/Ym45MHBH0O

Those “alerts” from various front offices keep coming thicker and faster (but mostly thicker).
“We’re playing teams that are bottom in the league … It’s just not good enough.”
Hours after the jolting Nino Niederreiter trade, the #MNWild fell flat in the face of an “alert” from their GM.@ChadGraff on another head-scratching loss in St. Paul:https://t.co/JFwWDgFRK5

Funny because it’s true?
Nino Niederreiter’s talents include “hockey” and “being traded 1-1 for players worse than him at hockey”

It’s good to know that Soupy is becoming the player we hoped he might be…for the Los Angeles Kings. (I’m not crying, you’re crying.)
This story was so much fun to report last summer and Dusty Imoo’s comment on Jack Campbell (“He’s going to work his ass off”) was oh so prescient https://t.co/0JabkWCh71
