Dallas Stars Daily Links: The Stars’ Ups And Downs, In Cinematic Shorthand
There’s usually a movie for that, as Mike Heika will point out. Plus, the NHL in Spanish, the Texas Stars in a weekday matinee, and more.
Jim Montgomery may be a good hockey coach, but he probably shouldn’t try to work Mike Heika’s side of the street.
The Dallas Stars’senior staff writer loves pulling examples from the movies to describe the team’s highs and lows. But Montgomery’s recent attempt to describe John Klingberg’s early struggles in cinematic terms left him a little gobsmacked:
He said Klingberg is too much like Roy McAvoy from the movie “Tin Cup,” taking bad risks and putting himself in bad situations because of it. He said Klingberg needs to be more like David Simms, the conservative pro who laid up on all four days at the U.S. Open just so he could contend for first place....
But c’mon, Monty, nobody likes David Simms. He was the villain of the movie. He ended up losing to Peter Jacobsen. He’s a putz.
If we’re going to do this movie stuff, at least pick a likeable comparison.
For his own part, Heika prefers the Top Gun analog:
...[Maverick] has all the skill in the world, but he needs to know how to control it. He has to bounce back from some bad experiences and come back stronger and smarter.
Klingberg is doing that. He was plus-8 in SAT Monday in a 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators. After being benched Saturday and playing a year-low 17:53 in a 4-1 win at Philadelphia, he bounced back and played 22:50 Monday. He had 14 shot attempts and helped drive play.
There’s more at Mike’s place, including the inevitable “wax on, wax off” invocation. [Dallas Stars]
