Dallas Stars Daily Links: Dallas’ Top Prospects

Finally, I get to lead with a Miro Heiskanen piece again!

…well, technically not. In actuality, Sean Shapiro wrote a piece giving a close look at the top 20 prospects in the Dallas Stars system. But hey, Heiskanen was the easy choice for #1, so it kind of counts?

Heiskanen isn’t just the best Stars prospect of this class, he’s the best prospect the team has had since Mike Modano was taken first overall in 1988. Heiskanen is a possession-driving machine in the form of a left-handed defender that carried a CF% of 56.9 and led Liiga in average time on ice at 25:06.

Shapiro ranked his prospects based on their ceiling, not their current skill level or NHL readiness. Still, you may (or may not) be surprised to hear who he had listed at #2:

The Stars don’t have many prospects like Roope Hintz. While there are a number of dynamic forwards with intriguing upside, but Hintz is the only true center prospect who looks like a future creator and distributor down the middle.

You can read the rest of Shapiro’s rankings over at the Athletic here.

Stanley Cup Playoffs Update

After tying up the series 1-1 with a Game 2 win, the Vegas Golden Knights took the series lead with a 4-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets. [Link]

Personally, I feel that one of the coolest parts of the night came before the actual game:

If there’s a bright side of things for the Jets, at least they have Mark Scheifele for six more years at only a $6.125 million cap hit:

Moving on: tonight, the Tampa Bay Lightning hope to tie up their series with the Washington Capitals. Goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy is a big reason why they have a good chance at doing so. [Sportsnet]

Around the League

The Dallas Stars continue to roll out announcements concerning the NHL draft:

New Carolina Hurricanes GM Don Waddell opened up about offseason plans, and it sure sounds like the team might be trying to “make a trade for the sake of making a trade.” [Sportsnet]

Could the Winnipeg Jets re-sign Paul Stastny this offseason? Likely not, but it’s possible:

Although many fans and players have called for the CWHL and NWHL to merge into one big women’s hockey league, don’t expect a merger anytime soon. [ESPN]

The NHL has announced its finalists for GM of the Year, although I have a strong feeling everyone knows who won already:

Jared Clinton breaks down the eight teams remaining at the World Championship and breaks them up into “Favorites,” “Champions,” and “Contenders”: [The Hockey News]

If you think Vegas will crash back to earth next year, you better hope there’s some serious regression in their top line:

Finally…

Okay, so this is totally not hockey-related, but this Twitter thread is by far worth the read:
