Dallas Stars Daily Links: Chasing the Game Against the Avs Hasn’t Paid Off for the Stars

Another 40+ shot game results in another loss for the Stars after they fell to Seymon Varlamov and the Colorado Avalanche last night by 4-3 score.

And out of those five games where they’ve hit 40 shots, two of them came against the Avalanche.

No I don’t mean to turn this into an advanced statistics post, but while updating my data, I noticed a few interesting numbers to explain why the 40 shot mark is nice, but it skews that specific stat a bit.

In 4 of their 5 meetings against the Avs, the Stars gave up the first goal. And except for the 4th meeting of the year, they failed to come back and take a lead on Colorado after giving up the first goal of the game.

The result?

Out of the 303 minutes and 36 seconds that Dallas and Colorado played each other, they were tied for 120:45, Dallas was chasing the game for a total of 172:34, and they held the lead for just 10:17. Most of that time accounts for the first meeting of the year between the two clubs when Rich Peverley opened the scoring.

From the time Matt Duchene scored to tie that first meeting on October 15th until Colton Sceviour scored with 2:52 left during their 4th meeting on December 17th, the Stars never led. And they never led last night.

If you’ve been following advanced statistical analysis for any length of time, you may know that when you are chasing the game for extended periods of time, your Corsi numbers are going to look great.

Which they have for long periods of time this season against Colorado.

  • The Stadium Series helped NBC set an overnight ratings record nationally for it’s telecast of the RangersDevils matchup at Yankee Stadium. The games this weekend also drew really well locally in NY and LA. [Brian Stubits – CBS Sports.com]
  • As you know, the NHL’ers will be making their 5th consecutive appearance at the Olympics when preliminary round action starts up on Wednesday, February 12th. This season, the NHL Network will join them as Kathryn Tappen will host a 30-minute daily special report at 2:00 CDT repeating every half hour until 7:00 CDT. [Chris Botta – Twitter]
  • Obviously, we hope the assembled security in the seaside Russian city is able to provide safety to all Olympic athletes, media, and spectators. But in case there’s a “significant” incident before February 9th, the NHL won’t hesitate to keep their players and coaches home. [Larry Lage – AP]
  • Turns out Marco Sturm had not retired two years ago. But he did, yesterday, due to an empty battery. [ELSHockey – Twitter]
  • Remember that controversial overturning of an apparent OT game winning goal by Thomas Vanek of the Islanders on Saturday? Well, Kerry Fraser thinks the Situation Room in Toronto got the call wrong and continues to wonder why the NHL is the only professional sports league that doesn’t allow it’s officiating personnel to review calls on video (I agree with him, BTW). • The Stars aren’t the only Central Division club that’s struggled in the month of January. Believe it or not, the Blackhawks are having a rough month as well having gone 4-4-4. It’s begging the question of whether Joel Quenneville’s personnel decisions, especially in regards to Bryan Bickell, are the right decisions. [James Neveau – NBC 5 Chicago]
