With their 6th round pick, 163rd overall, in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft the Dallas Stars selected forward Brett Davis from the WHL’s Kootenay Ice.
Davis is a jack-of-all-trades forward that can play center and wing. He has excellent skating acceleration and a solid top speed, and can produce points as both a finisher and a playmaker.
He registered 11 points in 29 games with the WHL’s Lethbridge Hurricanes before getting traded to the Ice, where he finished the season with 22 points in 30 games. Kootenay is a rebuilding team that struggled horribly in the 2016-17 season, but the good news for Davis is that he’ll get a ton of ice time in offensive roles over the next two seasons, which should be a huge boost for his development. If he can succeed as a Top 6 forward in the WHL he might be able to eventually transition that to the pro leagues.
