2011-2012 Texas Tornado Report: Back and Forth

The Texas Tornado (19-5-6, 44pts, #2 South) played a 3 game set against the Corpus Christi Ice Rays, with the Friday and Saturday match-ups coming in Frisco and the Sunday matinee being played in Corpus. The teams split the games at the Dr Pepper Arena and then Texas was able to mount a furious 3rd period comeback to secure an OT win on Sunday.

More on the Tornado after the jump…

Tornado Dig Deep Hole, Unable to Climb Out, Fall 3-2

The Tornado allowed the first three goals of their game against Corpus on Friday night, and though they battled back to cut the defecit to one, they were unable to score the game-tying goal and fell by a score of 3-2. Reid Mimmack made his third straight start in net, but his 26 saves were not enough to out-duel Ice Rays goalie Anthony Stolarz, who stopped 24 of 26. It was his third straight victory against Texas this season. After a scoreless first, the Ice Rays built a 3-0 lead early into the 3rd. Jack Prince and Nick Neville scored to bring the Tornado within 1, but Texas could never drive home the equalizer.

Lovick’s 4 Point Night Propels Texas Past Ice Rays, 5-3

In a back-and-forth contest that featured three ties and three lead changes, the Tornado defeated the Ice Rays 5-3. Jordan Lovick had a goal and three assists, while Joakim Jutras made 16 of 19 saves to pick up his 12th win of the season. Texas peppered the Ice Rays goalie, who lost against the Tornado for the first time in four tries this season. Lovick scored the first goal for Texas, which tied the score at 1 in the first. Conner Burton, Mico Solorzano, and Jack Prince (twice) added goals for the Tornado who were able to skate away with a 5-3 victory.

Jordan Greenberg Lifts Texas in OT, 6-5

Texas trailed the Ice Rays 4-2 at the start of the third and 5-4 with three minutes left in regulation, but battled back for a 6-5 OT victory. The OT winner was potted by Jordan Greenberg, who had four points and scored along with his brother, Justin, for the fifth time this season. Jordan Lovick also scored twice, continuing his strong weekend which would wrap up with 7 points in the last 2 games. Reid Mimmack came on in relief of Joakim Jutras at the start of the third period and got the win, making saves on 5 of the 6 shots he faced.
