2009 NHL Draft: Alex Chiasson in his own words

Picture_057_medium I think they really liked my work ethic on the ice. I’m a power forward that really likes to go to the net and they [Dallas Stars] really liked me a lot.

Things you to need to work on at Boston University?

I’m actually headed out to BU tomorrow, so I’ll work out there. Ya know I’m 6-3, 195 right now and to take it to the next level I need to get bigger, put on some pounds.

Why did you pick BU?

I just felt it was the best pick for me. They just won the national championship and the way they play the game is close to how I play. It was just the best fit, it’s close to home, it’s amazing.

How did you know the Stars would pick you?

I had some psychological tests, I went through everything with them. They talked to my teachers, they talked to my parents, they talked to my housing parents, coaches, my friends. I went through a lot, more than with any team.

It was a pretty good move up the rankings, were you expecting maybe third round not second?

You never know, you just want to be realistic about where you’re going but at the same time you tell yourself it’s the second round, it’s not bad being in the top 40 in the world. I’m happy about it.

Timetable to the NHL, how long will you be at BU?

Whenever….Coach Parker’s job is to the guys ready for the next level. Anytime there’s a guy leaving he’s said he did what he had to do and he’s kinda happy for me no matter what happens.

Why did you pick BU over juniors.

When a kid from Quebec chooses college over junior hockey, ya know…..it’s cool. I’m an A student and I think school is important for yourself and it teaches you more than hockey and it gets you ready. So it’s a balance in life and I just thought it was the best decision for me.

What about this past season at Des Moines and how you improved your play led the Stars to pick you this high?

It was great for me. We had a rough season but at the same time I got to play against real good hockey players and you know my coach was J. P. Parise [Zach Parise‘s father] and he knows what it takes to make it to the next level and I had a chance to talk to Zach a couple of times and uh, he made such a better hockey players in many different aspects.

Your known primarily as a power forward, who also can score. Will you continue to build on your physical play, or try to become more of a skill guy?

I think I’m going to keep both, I think that’s what makes me a good hockey player. When I play physical, that’s when I score goals. It’s great to say, but that’s where it is. I like to go hard and play physical.

Do you look forward to learning from a guy like Brenden Morrow?

You know Brenden Morrow, Mike Ribeiro all those guys will be great. You know it’s kind of warm out there, it feels great.
