Multiple media outlets this morning reported and the Dallas Stars confirmed that captain Jamie Benn has been re-signed to a one-year contract. Details of the contract are being reported as a $1 million base salary with incentives that could earn him up to $4 million total over the course of the year. The bonuses are reportedly based on games played – $500k for every 20 games this year up to 60 game threshold, and then another $500k for winning the Conference and/or the Stanley Cup.

It’s very unsurprising to see Benn back in Dallas. The 35-year-old forward has only known this organization his entire NHL career. Drafted in the 5th round of the 2007 draft, Benn has the second-most points in franchise history (956 ) behind only Mike Modano. His 1,192 games played ranks second in franchise history as well. Other Benn fun stats:

  • Second-most in goals scored (399)
  • Fourth-most in power play goals scored (109)
  • Third-most in shorthanded goals (16)
  • Tied for fourth-most hat tricks with teammate Tyler Seguin (7)
  • Second-most game-winning goals (62)

Benn is also the longest-tenured captain in franchise history. “You want to talk about immortal, statue-out-front-of-the-rink type person and player and leader, that’s Jamie Benn,” Dallas center Matt Duchene said at end-of-season media availabilities in May. “That’s probably the best way to put it. I think it would be a crime if he’s not a Dallas Star for life. He bleeds green and he’s going to go down as one of the greatest Dallas Stars to ever play for a long, long time.

“Hopefully he’s able to continue his career [here]. He’s still a great player. He brings so much to the table for us, more than people know.”

Duchene got his wish – the captain is forever a Dallas Star.
