NHL Trade Deadline: Dallas Stars Linked to Kris Russell, Dan Hamhuis; Will Trade Be Made Today?

The NHL trade deadline is technically 3 PM EST today. That’s the time when teams have to have the paperwork filed with the front office. Understandably, some deals don’t become known until after that time because of the mad rush right at the end of teams making those last few deals.

It’s been pretty quiet on the Dallas Stars front, with only one real persistent rumor: Dallas Stars are interested in Dan Hamhuis, the defenseman out of Vancouver. A new name was added this morning in the form of Kris Russell from the Calgary Flames. Since Russell doesn’t come across as an upgrade on defense outside of experience, I have to wonder if the asking price for Hamhuis is still too high and Jim Nill is using interest in Russell as a stalking horse to lower the asking price of Hamhuis. That’s pure speculation and looking at what Russell brings (who seems to be a younger, smaller Alex Goligoski with less defensive soundness than the veteran Stars blueliner) and what the Stars currently need (which is basically the opposite of that).

As the deadline approaches, however, it is looking more likely that the Stars don’t make a move at this deadline. Jim Nill’s done his major overhauls and acquisition of pieces in the summers to date, and they could be thinking that the team that has gotten the Stars this far in the season, sitting second in the west behind the Chicago Blackhawks by a single point with a game in hand, is good enough to take them into the postseason.

How would you feel if they don’t make any moves today?
