The Florida Panthers defeated the Dallas Stars, 4-3, in a shootout on Tuesday night. It was the third win of the preseason for the Panthers, who are 3-0-0, while the Stars preseason record sits at 0-0-2 with both games ending past regulation without a win.
“Obviously not the result we wanted,” Stars defenseman Ryan Suter said. “We kind of quit playing in the third period.”
Panthers forward Mason Marchment opened the scoring with a tipped shot from forward Owen Tippett on the power play at 3:20 of the first period to give Florida a 1-0 lead. That would be the final score at the end of the period, with the Stars holding a 16-9 advantage in shots on goal. Each team had one power play opportunity in the period.
The Panthers would make the score 2-0 at 2:57 of the second period off of a snap shot by forward Logan Hutsko that bounced off of the pads of Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger. The Stars would tie the game, 2-2, 12:48 into the second period off of a backhand shot from forward Jason Robertson on the same power play he drew from a holding call on Panthers defenseman Matt Kiersted. Stars forward and captain Jamie Benn scored less than two minutes later when he sent a wrist shot past Panthers goaltender Chris Gibson at 14:07 of the period to give the Stars a 3-2 lead.
With the goaltender pulled for an extra attacker, the Panthers would score to tie the game at 19:16 of the third period to force overtime off a backhand shot from forward Serron Noel.
“Really liked the first two periods, I thought we did a lot of good things. Hated the third period,” Stars head coach Rick Bowness said. “Really disappointed in the third period, just stopped playing.”
“We just stopped playing,” Bowness continued. “We made it really easy for that team to play and I hate seeing that. So we got what we deserved.”
The Panthers went 1-for-3 in the shootout for the win.
