The Season Is Here

It’s been a long (and, for some, hectic) offseason. But today marks the (un)official start of the Dallas Stars season.

The prospects are in Traverse City to take on prospects of other NHL teams in a round-robin tournament prior to heading down to Cedar Park for Training Camp. The tournament will feature three games: today at 6:30 PM vs the Toronto Maple Leafs, Saturday at 6:00 PM vs the Detroit Red Wings, and Sunday vs the St. Louis Blues at 11 AM.

The Red Wings often have streams (with no commentation) on their website for their own games, so you’ll definitely get a chance to check out the Saturday game. But check in on their website tonight to see if you can catch more than the one game.

Training Camp will kickoff next Wednesday with off-ice testing and meetings. The first on-ice sessions will start on Thursday and are free and open to the public. You do have to reserve tickets for it, so head over here to get yours. Public on-ice sessions are scheduled as follows (and, of course, are subject to change):

Thursday, Sept. 22nd:
9:30 – 10:45 AM
11:30 – 12:45 PM
1:30 – 2:45 PM

Friday, Sept. 23rd:
9:30 – 10:45 AM
11:30 – 12:45 PM
1:30 – 2:45 PM

Saturday, Sept. 24th:
10:00 – 11:00 AM
12:00 PM inter-squad scrimmage

A few days later, the preseason will get under way. Unlike in years past, some of the preseason tilts are actually going to be broadcast (not every one, but some, and hey we’ll take what we can get right?) Here’s how the preseason schedule shakes out:

  • Monday, Sept. 26 vs St. Louis; puck drop at 7:00 PM (no broadcast)
  • Tuesday, Sept. 27 vs Arizona at BOK Center in Tulsa; puck drop at 7:00 PM (no broadcast)
  • Thursday, Sept. 29 vs Minnesota; puck drop at 7:00 PM (BSSW Extra)
  • Saturday, Oct. 1 @ St. Louis at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City; puck drop at 7:00 PM (no broadcast)
  • Monday, Oct. 3 vs Colorado; puck drop at 7:00 PM (no broadcast)
  • Wednesday, Oct. 5 @ Colorado; puck drop at 8:30 PM (TNT)
  • Saturday, Oct. 8 @ Minnesota; puck drop at 5:00 PM (BSSW)/

With my work over at NHL.com, it’s been hard to keep up with consistent content here at Defending Big D. I’ve got a very time-consuming real-world job, and with me attending every home game and practice availability on weekends/holidays/days off, I’ve got to take some down time in between to avoid burnout. It’s a really long season, and these past few years because of COVID/Olympics/World on Fire we’ve lived in, the schedules have been even more compressed than normal.

I’m hoping this season is more “normal” comparatively. However, I could use additional help here. So if you’re interested in joining the Defending Big D staff, please shoot me an email at taylordbaird@gmail.com or a DM on twitter (@taylordbaird). There’s room here for anyone that wants to contribute, whether it be with daily links, features, stat analysis, or monthly round-ups of player’s dog pictures. Let’s chat about what you want and what the site needs and see if there’s a fit.
