Dallas Stars Make One Move at Trade Deadline, Couldn’t Land Dan Hamhuis

The Dallas Stars are officially done, with no other moves made at the trade deadline outside of the earlier acquisition of former Calgary Flames defenseman Kris Russell.

There were rumors floating around as the deadline approached that both the Dallas Stars and Chicago Blackhawks made pitches for Vancouver Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis, but reports are that there was no move made with the pending unrestricted free agent at the deadline.

It seems as though Vancouver’s asking price from Dallas started with the words “Julius Honka” which seems ridiculously overpriced for a rental (yes, we’ll give you a future cornerstone on defense for two months of an older player we may not even re-sign come the summer, said basically nobody ever…)

You have to think that the Russell acquisition was a safety net for just this kind of news. Russell has been a solid penalty killer, and that’s definitely a part of the game Dallas needs to shore up if they want to go far in the playoffs this season.

Jim Nill continues to do yeoman’s work in the summer, and the moves today did not mortgage the future too heavily for the here and now. He’ll see where this group goes and who they’ll loose to free agency and get back to work filling in holes.

Until then, this is the roster (outside of up to 4 call-ups they can make post-deadline). What do you think of the moves Dallas made today?
