Dallas Stars Sign RFAs Patrik Nemeth, Jack Campbell to Contract Extensions

As Mike Heika reported on Twitter, the Dallas Stars have officially announced the signing of defenseman Patrik Nemeth and goalie Jack Campbell to two and one year contract extensions, respectively.

Both Nemeth and Campbell were set to be restricted free agents on July 1. Terms of the deals have been reported as $900,000 for Nemeth on a one-way deal with Campbell getting a two-way deal ($650,000 at NHL level, $90,000 at AHL level) per Mike Heika (who's usually pretty good at these kinds of things).

Nemeth, 23, had his first full season in the NHL last season after debuting in the spring of 2014, but he missed most of the year due to a serious laceration on his wrist. He had three assists in 22 games last year, missing 50 with that injury. At 6-foot-4, 233 pounds, he brings an imposing presence to the Stars blueline

Campbell, 23, spent most of last season with the Texas Stars in the AHL, though he was sent to the ECHL for a stretch to get more playing time. He had a 3.03 goals against average and 0.907 save percentage in 35 AHL games.

Campbell was the Stars first-round pick in the 2010 NHL draft, and Nemeth was the team's second-round pick that same year.

Combined with Monday's extension for Jyrki Jokipakka, the signings leave two notable unsigned RFAs for the Stars - defenseman Jamie Oleksiak and forward Curtis McKeznie.

Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill announced today that the club has signed defenseman Patrik Nemeth to a two-year contract extension. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Nemeth, 23, recorded three assists (0-3=3), six penalty minutes and 16 shots on goal in 22 games with Dallas during the 2014-15 campaign. The defenseman missed 52 games after suffering an arm laceration on Oct. 18 vs. Philadelphia. The Stars were 14-6-2 in games in which he played.

The blueliner appeared in eight regular-season American Hockey League (AHL) contests with Texas, tallying two points (0-2=2) and six assists. He also registered one assist (0-1=1) and shared the team-lead with a +2 rating in three Calder Cup Playoffs games.

"Patrik gives us a physical and smart player that makes good reads and has a strong net front presence," said Nill. "After suffering such a serious injury, his drive and determination to return to action before the season ended was quite remarkable and he made a solid impact upon returning. We know he'll be ready from day one of training camp to come in and strengthen our back end."

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound native of Stockholm, Sweden was originally selected by Dallas in the second round (41st overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft.

Campbell, 23, posted a 14-14-5 record with a 3.03 goals against average, a .907 save percentage and two shutouts in 35 regular-season games this season for the Texas Stars, Dallas' top development affiliate in the American Hockey League. He also appeared in one playoff contest and posted a 3.03 goals against average and a .889 save percentage. Additionally, he played seven games for Idaho of the ECHL and went 5-2-0-0 with a .945 save percentage and a 1.73 goals against average.

Following the season, Campbell represented the United States of America at the IIHF World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic. Helping the USA to a Bronze Medal, he appeared in two games posting a 1-1 record.

He made his lone NHL appearance on Oct. 20, 2013 making 41 saves in a losing effort to Anaheim. In four combined AHL seasons, he has a record of 49-36-5-6 in 103 games played.

"Jack winning 11 out of his last 14 games last season was huge in solidifying another postseason appearance for Texas," Nill said. "We fully expect him to build off of that success and continue his growth."
