The Dallas Stars continue to make moves on the first day of free agency with a pair of depth signings.
The first was defenseman Andreas Borgman, who was signed to a one year, two-way deal worth $750k. Borgman (26), has spent the majority of his career in the AHL, though he did appear in seven games for the Tampa Bay Lightning this past season. Due to his lack of NHL experience and meager cap hit, it’s presumed that Borgman was signed purely for defensive depth. Expect him to spend most of his time in Cedar Park with the Dallas Stars, or possibly in Dallas as the team’s seventh (or eighth) defenseman.

FRISCO, Texas — Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill announced today that the club has signed defenseman Andreas Borgman to a one-year, two-way contract.
Borgman, 26, split the 2020-21 season between Tampa Bay and Syracuse of the American Hockey League (AHL). The defenseman skated in seven regular-season NHL games with Tampa Bay last season and recorded two assists (0-2=2) with seven shots on goal and four penalty minutes. He also tallied five points (3-2=5) and a +5 plus/minus rating in 12 regular-season AHL games with Syracuse in 2020-21.
Borgman has registered 13 points (3-10=13) in 55 career regular-season NHL games over parts of two seasons with Toronto and Tampa Bay. The defenseman has also skated in 135 career regular-season AHL contests with Toronto, San Antonio and Syracuse, posting 47 career points (13-34=47). He’s recorded two points (1-1=2) in 15 career AHL postseason games and helped Toronto win the 2018 Calder Cup. Borgman has made on appearance on the international stage with Team Sweden, recording one assist (0-1=1) in five games during the 2013 World U18 Championship.
The 6-foot, 205-pound native of Stockholm, Sweden was originally undrafted and signed as a free agent by Toronto on May 16, 2017 before being signed as a free agent by Tampa Bay on Oct. 9, 2020.
The Stars’ also signed defenseman Alexander Petrovic to a similar deal. Petrovic (29) was an NHL regular for a few years but has spent most of the past two seasons in the AHL. Like Borgman, Petrovic bolsters the Stars’ organizational depth on the blueline, and is not expected to log regular NHL minutes at this point, barring major injury issues with the big club.

Petrovic, 29, appeared in 17 regular-season games for Stockton of the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2020-21, recording 12 points (2-10=12). He also spent the 2019-20 season in the AHL with Providence, where he posted 20 points (2-18=20) in 54 regular-season games played.
Over the span of seven NHL seasons from 2012-13 through 2018-19, he appeared in 263 regular-season games for Florida and Edmonton, registering 50 points (5-45=50) and 360 penalty minutes. He also appeared in six Stanley Cup Playoff games with Florida in 2016 and he posted four points (1-3=4).
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound native of Edmonton, Alberta was originally selected by Florida in the second round (36th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft.
