Dallas Stars Recall Brendan Ranford From AHL; Could Make NHL Debut vs. Sharks

The Dallas Stars have recalled winger Brendan Ranford from the AHL this afternoon, who could potentially make his NHL debut on Thursday night against the San Jose Sharks. The Stars have placed winger Travis Moen on injured reserve, and with Ales Hemsky still questionable with his injury Dallas needed to recall a player from the AHL — and Ranford could get his shot.

Ranford is the second-leading scorer for the Texas Stars this season with 13 goals and 23 assists in 50 games, and is the only player to appear in every game for Texas this season.

Ranford was a high-scoring playmaker for the Kamloops Blazers, and signed with the Texas Stars on an AHL tryout contract last summer after a great showing at development camp. The versatile winger came on strong in the second half of the season and in the playoffs to earn an NHL contract with Dallas.

The 5-10, 190 winger finished with 17 points in the final 19 games of the regular season last year, and went 8-8-16 in 21 playoff games last summer. He’s one of the better skill wingers on the Texas Stars the past two years, and now gets to go from a free agent to his NHL debut in just about 18 months.

Here’s the press release:

FRISCO, Texas – Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill announced today that the club has recalled forward Brendan Ranford from the Texas Stars, Dallas’ top development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL).

Ranford, 22, currently ranks second on Texas with 23 assists and 36 points (13-23=36), while he ranks third on the squad with 13 goals in 50 games this season.

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound native of Edmonton, Alta. was originally selected by Philadelphia in the seventh round (209th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft, and was signed by Dallas as a free agent on July 2, 2014.

Nill also announced today that the club has placed forward Travis Moen on Injured Reserve (upper body), retroactive to Feb. 17. Moen has recorded six points (1-5=6) in 30 games with Dallas this season
