Editorial Note: I’d like to make something clear about what these prospects updates will be about. These won’t be in depth accounts of how each prospect played in every game. There are at least 20 prospects playing in Europe and in various North American leagues. It isn’t possible for me to watch every game.
I will however try and make sure that whenever there are highlights available or reports on a game they will be linked to their relevant player. Any huge developments in regards to a player will likely be covered in a separate article rather than in detail within this post.
In these pieces you will get the stats, the news and highlights for each player. I want these pieces to be as informative as possible but it also has to be practical because covering this number of players can make these pieces very long.
With that in mind, any ideas for improvements would be very much welcomed in the comments so I can make these posts more than just stat dumps. Once we get settled into the season, the updates will regularly run on Monday afternoon.
With most of the European and Junior seasons underway the Dallas Stars around the globe are back in action. This will be the first of many weekly updates on the progress of the Stars prospects.
North America – CHL
Despite the QMJHL playing since the 10th of September the Dallas Stars have had no prospects that have played yet. Only Philippe Desrosiers is in the QMJHL and he has been at Traverse City and remains in Dallas after the Stars’ training camp.
The OHL does not start until the 24th September so the Stars many prospects in the OHL have not yet started their seasons.
In the WHL only Cole Ully has been playing with Brett Pollock being at the Dallas Stars training camp. Ully’s Kamloops Blazers started the season hot, winning their first game against the Victoria Royals 6-3. Ully had a goal and two assists in that one game. Highlights of the game can be found on the Blazers website (Ully is number 21). He would go pointless in a 6-1 loss against the Kelowna Rockets.
Europe
Most of the European leagues have been in action for the past 10 days and they have put in a good number of games. Two European prospects that have been out of the action due to their participation at Traverse City are Esa Lindell and Ludwig Bystrom. Both played their first regular season games this weekend.
Ludwig Bystrom technically played his first game for Farjestad on Saturday in a 4-3OT loss to Vaxjo. However he dressed as the seventh defenseman. He did not touch the ice though the statistics recorded on the SHL website says he played a game. During the European Champions League Hockey tournament Bystrom did play for Farjestad on their second pairing.
This is particularly frustrating to see and it is possible that Bystrom will find himself loaned to a team in the Allsvenska. With the depth in Cedar Park it is difficult to see him playing in Texas this year instead.
Niklas Hansson is currently the second in scoring for Rogle with four points through five games. He’s been playing on Rogle’s top defensive pairing and has been playing around the 20 minute mark per game. He had two assists in a 6-4 loss on Saturday and two assists in a loss on Thursday.
Emil Molin, who also plays for Rogle, missed their opener after he took a puck to the head in the pre season. The injury took him out of the Traverse City tournament. After spending their first three games on their fourth line he played the last game on the first line. Hopefully he will be able to maintain this position in the lineup and get the ice time he needs to develop. He has yet to register a point this season however.
One of the more interesting surprises coming out of Europe is the Dallas Stars sixth round pick last year, John Nyberg, making his regular season SHL debut. The 18-year-old defenseman had played a few games with Frolunda’s J20 team before he was called up to the SHL. Here is an article from the Swedish media about his call up. Unfortunately now that Nyberg is playing in the SHL the J20 website has removed his statistics from the website.
Nyberg has played two games so far with Frolunda, though he only registered about six minutes per game. While it is good to see that Nyberg is valued enough to earn the first callup though it may limit his development playing only six minutes per game. Playing in the SHL is a big opportunity for the young defender.
In Finland Esa Lindell has played three games for Assat and finished pointless in all of those games. He has been on their top defensive pairing and is averaging just under 24 minutes per game. With that sort of ice time it will put him in very good stead to step up into a position in the AHL next year.
Aleksi Makela was loaned by Ilves at the beginning of the season to LeKi in the Mestis. The Mestis is the second division of professional Finnish hockey. He’s played three games so far for Leki but has yet to register a point. He’s on their second defensive pairing and is averaging around 17 minutes of ice time per game.
Miro Karjalainen has been with HIFK J20 and has yet to register a point. He’s been playing on their second defensive pairing and is playing just under 15 minutes per night.
Dmitry Sinitsyn has split the season so far between the MHL (The Russian Junior League) and the VHL (The Russian equivalent of the AHL). He played two games in the MHL, he registered a single point, before he was moved to the VHL. It appears for now that Sinitsyn will stay Dynamo Balashikha for most of the season. Balashikha is Dynamo Moscow’s affiliate in the VHL.
In five games with Balashikha he has had a single goal, a powerplay goal, and has averaged between 13 and 18 minutes per game.
