Dallas Stars Recall John Klingberg, Place Valeri Nichushkin on IR

The Dallas Stars have called John Klingberg up from the Texas Stars. In a corresponding move Valeri Nichushkin has been place on injured reserved. Nichushkin is still bothered by the same nagging injuries from training camp. The Stars are hoping more rest will help him fully recover.

Klingberg has been impressive in ten games in Austin this season, registering twelve points. The fluid blueliner possesses a set of skills that could greatly help this group get out of their own end, greatly help the powerplay, and provide the coveted right handed shot.

For the time being the Stars have eight defensemen on the roster. Mike Heika provides some of the possibilities for how that situation could change:

The Stars will have eight defensemen, so they might have to make a decision both on the lineup and possibly on sending a player to the minors. They could take out either Jordie Benn or Kevin Connauton from the lineup or they could take out both and insert Klingberg and Jamie Oleksiak. They also could assign Oleksiak to the AHL or they could place Jordie Benn or Connauton on waivers.

Inserting both Klingberg and Jamie Oleksiak into the lineup would offer a dramatic change to the composition of the back end that really can’t hurt at this point.

Jordie Benn has been awful. Kevin Connauton has been bad. Would the Stars really waive either player? We’ll see soon if something else is up their sleeves.
