A couple of weeks ago, it did not appear that the Dallas Stars had any chance of catching the Winnipeg Jets in the standings. After tough losses to Edmonton, Winnipeg and Colorado last month, all of which are the type of teams Dallas will need to go through to reach the Stanley Cup, even attempting to do it seemed futile. Since that loss to Colorado on March 16, the Stars have won every game since except for one, and are currently riding a six-game winning streak — four of which have come on the road.
Dallas Morning News writer Lia Assimakopoulos published an article yesterday discussing Dallas’ chances of winning the Central Division, and possibly even the President’s Trophy. According to her, the Stars have a couple things in their favor:
“The Stars have the chance at a four-point swing when they take on Winnipeg head-to-head next Thursday at American Airlines Center. Dallas lost to Winnipeg twice (two weeks ago and back in November) and won once in December.”
She continues on to write,
“Besides Winnipeg, the Stars should be able to coast through the end of their regular season schedule. They play Nashville and Pittsburgh, two teams well out of the playoffs. They then face Minnesota and Vancouver, which have fallen off in recent weeks. Only two of Dallas’ remaining eight opponents are currently in a playoff spot.
The Jets, on the other hand, play four playoff teams in their last seven games, including Pacific Division leader Vegas, a streaking St. Louis team and reigning Stanley Cup finalist Edmonton.”
Given this team’s momentum and schedule the rest of the way, I think the Stars have a very real chance to accomplish both. It would likely be in their best interest, mainly to avoid playing Colorado in the first round which they are very well aware of. I think it’s fair to say they would much rather play the Minnesota Wild or St. Louis Blues (despite how hot that team has been lately).

Around The Central
Aside from the Stars taking on the Nashville Predators, we have some other Central Division foes taking the ice tonight:
- The Colorado Avalanche will face off against the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight, finishing off a back-to-back.
- The scorching hot St. Louis Blues host Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight. The Blues have won 10 straight games and have pretty much solidified their spot in the playoffs with this streak.
- The Utah Hockey Club will take on the Los Angeles Kings this evening. While Utah needs a miracle to make the playoffs, the Kings are playing for seeding.
- The Winnipeg Jets take a trip to Sin City to take on the Vegas Golden Knights. This will be a good game, as both teams are leaders in their division.

The #Gr8Chase is now a hat trick away from coming to fruition after Alex Ovechkin scored career goal No. 892. The @Capitals captain’s 39 goals this season are the most by a player age 39+ in more than 55 years.#NHLStats: https://t.co/pryPIamL59 pic.twitter.com/ZbM90n2Wgz
