Mike Heika has some news for you this morning: You’re stressed because you care. You’re still annoyed about the Stars playing Antti Niemi against the Blues, he says, because this year, everything matters. We’re invested. That’s certainly not always the case in Dallas come April, but we better get used to it.
That’s what you get in the post-season. You get Brenden Morrow defining his career in 2008. You get Ed Belfour beating Patrick Roy in two consecutive seasons. You get Joe Nieuwendyk winning the Conn Smythe Trophy. Those are the memories that stand out in the history of this franchise.
Of course, you also get unbearable pain. You get a loss to New Jersey in the finals, a heart-breaking seven-game series against Vancouver in 2007, a collapse in Game 6 in 2013. They are also memories that stand out in the history of this franchise.
And while the stakes may be higher than they’ve been in past years, Heika reminds you to enjoy it.
And as scary as it might seem sometimes, it’s a world you’ve probably missed a great deal. So enjoy it. Enjoy it Tuesday against the Kings and enjoy it in April in the playoffs.
Revel even in the minutiae, because from here on out, it all means something.
