The Dallas Stars were recently fined $100,000 for HAVING practice. Yes, practice. We’re talking about practice, man!
Okay, okay, so there is more to the story here. Just ask coach Pete DeBoer. Oh, too soon?
For those that were unaware, the Stars have been fined $100,000 by the NHL for violating the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) by holding an optional practice during the league’s holiday break, which took place December 24-27.
News of this came out in an interview with DeBoer, who accidentally (or unknowingly) disclosed that an optional practice was held on the 26th. Under this CBA, teams are also not allowed to travel or trade players during this timeframe.
Unfortunately, that practice didn’t pay off the following night against the Minnesota Wild, where the Stars forfeited a two-goal lead and lost to the Wild in overtime.
…but it was just practice!

Around The Central
We have a few Central Division friends in action tonight:
- The Minnesota Wild will face off against the Washington Capitals as Alex Ovechkin looks to inch closer to breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record. The Wild’s Kirill Kaprizov appears to be out for this one, but this should still be a good game nonetheless.
- The Winnipeg Jets host the Anaheim Ducks in what should be an easy win. The Jets are riding a four-game winning streak.
- The Colorado Avalanche will shave some ice with the Buffalo Sabres tonight. Both teams are on winning streaks so one will end tonight, hopefully Colorado’s.
- The Utah Hockey Club makes a trip north of the border to square off with the Calgary Flames. Utah is on a four game skid so let’s see if they can start the new year on the right foot, or skate? Yeah, skate sounds better….

Okay, I am officially old 😭:
A generational shift is underway in the NHL, with a fitting end to 2024 as the top two rookie scorers (Matvei Michkov and Macklin Celebrini) went head-to-head on New Year’s Eve.
