Dallas Stars Daily Links: Will Ty Dellandrea Make the NHL Roster?
Or perhaps the question should be “will he make it permanently?” Plus, standouts from Traverse City, the top prospects in the NHL, and more.
Heading into training camp today, Dallas Stars prospect Ty Dellandrea is in a tight spot. Even though he’s good enough to play in the AHL this season, he can’t due to the NHL’s agreement with the OHL for younger players. So Dellandrea will be rejoining the Flint Firebirds this season unless he makes the NHL team out of camp, and that might be a tad difficult:
“His play will dictate where he is,” Stars general manager Jim Nill said. “In the end, the NHL is a league where it’s about winning, so you’ve got to earn the stripes. The other thing you’ve got to weigh is — he might be close to making it, but is he playing every night? And that’s the key … he’s got to play. To have him sitting out in the NHL doesn’t make sense.”
Of course, the Stars don’t have to decide Dellandrea’s fate before the season starts. If they want, the Stars could wait until they see him play in some regular season games:
Dellandrea’s window could be extended roughly a month into the season as the Stars coaches make that decision. If he plays 10 games, the Stars would burn a year of his entry-level contract. Nine or less and it slides a year. Nill admitted that if the Stars need to use nine games to make that decision, it’s something they would be willing to do.
