Dallas Stars Daily Links: Training Camp Approaches

It’s not much longer until the Stars take the ice in Frisco. Plus, Kiviranta scores a hat trick in Traverse City, Jake Gardiner finally finds a home, and more.

The Traverse City Prospects Tournament is well underway, giving the Dallas Stars’ prospects a head start on the hockey season. But the veterans won’t be far behind — training camp starts this Friday, and Dallas head coach Jim Montgomery is ready to put his players to work:

“I definitely think we can hit the ground running, more so than last year,” Montgomery said. “I didn’t know anyone last year. Now, I know most of the players and have coached most of the players. I think we can get to work immediately on establishing our work ethic and our identity, and we can stick with it.”

Training camp will be the first of many steps in determining the final NHL roster. It’s quite possible that one or more of those 23 players might not even be under contract yet, instead playing for Dallas or some other team on a PTO:

“It ups the skill level in the camp,” [general manager Jim] Nill said when asked about the PTOs. “It’s an opportunity for them, and it’s an opportunity for us, and it’s an opportunity for the whole league… right now, everybody loves what they’ve done, they love their team. All of a sudden you get to camp, you get three, four, five injuries... and now you are looking for players. So you can never have enough depth and enough players.”
