Dallas Stars Daily Links: Stars GM Nill Acquires Ben Bishop’s Rights

Nill pulls the trigger on a goalie deal, Ottawa eliminates the Rangers, NHL Concussion Protocol needs more teeth and P.K. Subban has no idea why Montreal traded him.

Stars GM Jim Nill finally pulled the trigger on a trade to upgrade Dallas goaltending situation. He traded the 4th round pick from Montreal in the Jordie Benn trade to the Los Angeles Kings to obtain the rights for UFA Ben Bishop.

Nill said “Bishop is among the best available. He finished second in the Vezina voting last season and he has a terrific résumé," Nill said. "We are hoping we can get him signed and he can become a big part of our team moving forward."

Bishop who is 6’7”  has ties to the Dallas area, playing for the Texas Tornados of the NAHL and graduating from Frisco High school. He also lives in St. Louis where he often worked with Ken Hitchcock and the Blues during the off season.

"I think we have a good relationship, and I know his teams in St. Louis were tough to play against," Bishop said. "Like I said, I don't want to get ahead of myself, but this looks a lot like the team we had in Tampa when I first got there. There is plenty of firepower to score goals, and the opportunity is there to work on the other areas and improve those areas."

Bishop has some impressive stats during his career with 4 teams, sporting a record of 270-148 record with a career GAA of 2.23 and a .919 save percentage. His play and Hitchcock’s coaching should help the Stars improve on their 29th best GAA on 3.13. (SportsDay DFW)

One of the Bishop’s highlights of his days as a Tornado is a goalie fight.

The Texas Stars were able to defeat Ben Bishop in his days with the Peoria Rivermen (St. Louis) back during the 2010-11 season.

It is game 7 tonight for the Anaheim Ducks and Edmonton Oilers at stake besides a trip to the Western Conference finals vs Nashville, is whether the Stars will get the Ducks 1st round pick if the Ducks win or the middle of the three 2nd round picks the Anaheim has if they lose. The conditional pick was part of the Patrick Eaves trade at the deadline.

All eyes will be on Ducks goalie John Gibson who was pulled from Game 6 after allowing 3 quick goals. Gibson worked yesterday with Ducks goalie coach Sudarshan Maharaj.

“You reiterate the core things that you’ve put in place all season,” Maharaj said. “We looked at a series of clips. We said, this is technically how we’ll adjust. John has a set routine. He’s confident in it. He likes to see it, deal with it and move on very quickly.” (Orange County Register)

Most fans probably cringed when Sidney Crosby crashed into the boards head first during Game 6 after missing Game 4 with a concussion. He took 9 seconds to get back up while play was still going on. It seems slow to get up is not part of the NHL Concussion Protocol so Crosby was never evaluated. (The Hockey News)
