The Stars needed a shot to the morale this week. They got it by dousing the Flames.
The Dallas Stars are home for the holidays, and last night they made sure their reunion with their fans would be a happy one. The team scored four unanswered goals in the third period to earn their 6-2 victory over the Calgary Flames, and looked very much like a playoffs team in the process.
The big win was also a gut-check moment for the team, writes Stars senior staff writer Mike Heika. After enduring two consecutive losses during a disappointing road trip, they sought to rebound from a week of misfortune and make a statement:
Playing their ninth game in 17 days with travel involved in eight of them, Dallas could have easily lost steam late against the Calgary Flames at American Airlines Center. Instead, the lads in Victory Green scored four times in the third period and cruised to a 6-2 win.
“I’m really proud of our group,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said. “We had a road trip east to Florida and Carolina, we had a road trip west to Utah and LA and Vegas, so we were running on fumes. I thought we dug deep tonight.”
And staying focused on the goal was, well, the goal:
Not only were the Stars worn down by the schedule, they had just lost a game in Los Angeles when the score was tied after two. Mix in the fact they didn’t want to lose three games in a row for the first time in DeBoer’s tenure, and there was plenty of motivation.
“We knew we needed it,” said [forward Sam] Steel. “The last couple of games, we let those slip. This was big. I think we did a great job.”

This does seem to be a recurring motif, doesn’t it?

Around The Leagues
I always suspect these arbitrary categorizations are done mainly to exclude any Dallas Stars from the lists, but then again I took that John Klingberg Calder Trophy snub really personally in an unearned way.

And here’s David Castillo reminding us that it’s not a Real Holiday unless there’s at least one family brawl. Enjoy.
For those that aren't on Twitter, you absolutely deserve to see the same thing I did yesterday: a Teddy Bear Toss staring a lot of angry hockey players, and the Grinch.
