As news of Seguin’s injury continues to weigh a week later, what are the Stars’ options to replace him?
We are about a week into a Tyler Seguin-less lineup, where the Dallas Stars have gone 2-2. Needless to say, there has been a lot of discussion as to what the plan is now that we have lost one of our leading goal-scorers for at least the remainder of the regular season. The assumption is that Seguin will be placed on Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR), which would free up $9.85 million in cap space prior to the trade deadline for GM Jim Nill to work with.
D Magazine‘s David Castillo briefly discusses how the Stars may go about backfilling Seguin while utilizing the additional wiggle room in cap space:
“It’s possible we won’t know for a while. The longer they wait to make a move and activate LTIR, the more they’ll have to spend. That also gives ample time to find internal solutions, which mostly boil down to young players taking a dramatic step up. Perhaps now’s the time to give Mavrik Bourque another shot at the top nine. Squint even harder, and you can talk yourself into a call-up for Antonio Stranges, who is having a breakout year.”
While internal solutions are an option, external is the most likely scenario (via trade), although the available talent is rather tepid:
“The top players this year are mid-level defenders including Ivan Provorov and Cam Fowler (both left shots, it should be noted, given Dallas’ overabundance of such defenders). Veterans like Taylor Hall and Mikael Granlund would be interesting, but they’d also be unlikely to match Seguin’s production let alone exceed it.”
Castillo even floats the idea of the Stars addressing their biggest needs (defense and power play) through two players, versus trading for one “bigger” name, albeit a talent pool that currently lacks.
Managing a team that is a Stanley Cup contender, it will be very interesting to see how Nill utilizes this opportunity in the coming weeks/months to position this team for postseason success.

Stars Stuff
Nicely written article by Stars’ writer Josh Clark covering Esa Lindell and his impact on the organization as a player and as a person.
Here’s a question for discussion: Does Esa have his number retired if he remains a Star for the rest of his career?
Esa Lindell is the third-longest tenured member of the Stars right now.

Around The Central
Six of the eight Central Division teams will be in action tonight:
- The Colorado Avalanche visit the Steel City to square off against the Penguins, who have won four straight at home [ESPN].
- The Nashville Predators will host the Calgary Flames. Both teams are as cold as ice, where the Predators have dropped their last seven games, and the Flames have lost six of their last seven [ESPN].
- The Winnipeg Jets have a play date with the Boston Bruins in the team’s first meeting this season. The Bruins are currently riding a four-game winning streak [ESPN].
- We have some intra-divisional action tonight as the Utah Hockey Club welcomes the Minnesota Wild in what should be a competitive game [ESPN].
- The St. Louis Blues will cap off their Canadian road trip in Vancouver against the Canucks [ESPN].
The Avalanche also continue their goalie overhaul:

A bright future lies ahead for the Montreal Canadiens’ rookie defenseman:
