Dallas Stars Daily Links: Kessel in Victory Green?

As most people know by now, the Pittsburgh Penguins have been shopping Phil Kessel this offseason. The team had a trade with the Minnesota Wild finalized, but the star winger exercised his limited no-trade clause to veto the deal.

So it looks like Kessel won’t be wearing dark green, at least not anytime soon. But what about Victory Green?

As the Dallas Stars dive head first into the offseason searching for offense, they should really give a long look at making a run at Kessel if Pittsburgh is determined to move him… He has finished with 70, 92, and 82 points the past three seasons. The man produces. If you’re a team looking for offense, you could do significantly worse than Kessel.

Of course, the main problem here is what the Stars would have to give up for him. The Wild offered Jason Zucker, and the Stars don’t really have a comparable player. But with the Penguins looking to get younger and offload cap space, the Stars might be able to pull off a package deal:

If Pittsburgh is attempting to save money to retool the rest of the roster, a young defender like [Julius] Honka could make sense, especially if the Penguins were able to move a more expensive contract like [Jack] Johnson or Olli Maatta in the process.

You can read more on what it might take to make a Kessel trade to Dallas happen in Josh Lile’s piece here.
