The Dallas Stars had reason to celebrate last night, with Colin Blackwell netting an overtime goal that ended what was a very stressful game given what was at stake. According to head coach Pete DeBoer, in an article posted by Dallas Morning News writer Tim Cowlishaw, the Stars knew the stakes were incredibly high last night:
“I mean our season [was] on the line, let’s be honest. We got away with it [an 0-2 deficit] last year in the first series against Vegas. But you’re probably not going to go to that well again this year and come up winning. So we knew our season was on the line.‘’
With Game 3 being held in Denver, things will not get any easier. Aside from the Stars being away from home ice, the Colorado Avalanche may get captain Gabriel Landeskog back — which will undoubtedly give their fan base even more energy for Game 3. The Stars will need to continue giving everything they have without leading goal scorer Jason Robertson and star defenseman Miro Heiskanen, about which Cowlishaw had this to say:
“[Heiskanen] has been missing since injuring a knee against Vegas in a collision with Mark Stone (him again) on Jan. 28. But he has been skating with the team for a considerable amount of time now, and it seems likely he will return at some point in this series. If Dallas has to wait any longer than the Denver games Wednesday and Saturday, that will be too late.”
It’s no secret that the Stars need these players back as soon as possible to have a chance of a deep postseason run, especially with how difficult the first two games have been and goaltender Jake Oettinger having a rough start thus far. The West is simply too competitive where the margin of error is extremely slim. Hopefully, Heiskanen makes his long-awaited return soon and if the Stars can get past Colorado, they will have Robertston back for the quarterfinals.
