IT’S OVER 9 MILLION! (In LTIR cap space, that is.)

The good news: The Dallas Stars are still in the top 10 of ESPN’s NHL Power Rankings. The bad news: They’ve dropped two places.

The latest list came out on Friday, and in fairness, most of that drop was due to the loss of Tyler Seguin for the rest of the regular season. Indeed, ESPN staff writer Arda Ocal opines that the holiday present the Stars need most isn’t the right-handed defender most of us are hyperfixated on:

The gift: An interim replacement for Tyler Seguin. The veteran forward is out for the rest of the season after having left hip surgery. Seguin was having a wonderful start to the season, including 20 points in 19 games, and Dallas is 2-2 so far in his absence. A move to LTIR would free up $9.85 million in cap room, but until then, AHL players will get looks to fill the spot. Could a trade be forthcoming?

Don’t look now, but the idea of finding another superstar scoring machine may be gaining traction. Consider what analyst and Friend o’ DBD Juraj Kralik posted at the new place yesterday:

My ideal forward addition for Dallas? Chris Kreider. Fairly moderate 6.5M cap hit for the next two years, he might be the only player that is *an upgrade* over Seguin. With the cap projected to rise significantly in the coming years, yeah, they could definitely fit him in down the road as well.

In On The #Kill Taker

There was plenty of Tuesday-night action in the #MurderDeathKill Division. What has the Central gotten up to this time…?

  • Former Star Brenden Dillon was one of four different goal scorers for the New Jersey Devils as the St. Louis Blues lost at home, 4-1. [NHL]
  • Has the worm turned for the Nashville Predators? Juuse Saros got the shutout as the Preds shut down the New York Rangers 2-0. [On The Forecheck]
  • The Chicago Blackhawks didn’t do so badly themselves, defeating the Washington Capitals 3-2 with a three-goal outburst in the third period. [Second City Hockey]
  • And Adam Lowry broke a late-game tie to propel the Winnipeg Jets past the San Jose Sharks in California, 4-3. [Winnipeg Free Press]

Speaking of the West Texas Pumpjack, and we just were, he and his family have congratulations coming all the way around.

Can you hear it? It’s getting closer.
