Dallas Stars Daily Links: Is Jake Oettinger For Real?
And does Rick Bowness see a future Vezina winner in him? Plus, Jamie Benn gets his score on, the OHL may finally be ready to start the season, and more.
Jake Oettinger may be ready for the NHL. Is the NHL ready for him?
The Dallas Morning News’ Matthew DeFranks zoomed in on the Otter commentary after last night’s shootout loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning – especially head coach Rick Bowness’ lavish praise:
“That game was over in the first period without Jake,” Bowness said. “Love his composure, love his compete. He’s getting better every game. He battled hard tonight.”...
“He’s a stud,” [captain Jamie] Benn said. “We don’t even get to where we got to without him. Played a great game, we’re asking a lot of him and he’s definitely stepping up. Just can’t say enough good things about him.”
And it’s interesting to note the example Bowness has chosen of Otter’s possible ceiling:
Bowness, meanwhile, sees a bit of Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy in the 22-year-old Oettinger.
“Imagine what Jake’s going to be in six, seven years,” Bowness said. “He’ll be right there [by Vasilevskiy].”
Matt has more. [SportsDayDFW]
Stars Stuff
The Stars lost in the shootout, but least Jamie Benn got off the schneid at an opportune moment.
And how much have you missed Alexander Radulov? Be specific.
After enduring consecutive shutouts at the hands of the Tampa Bay Lightning, a shootout loss does seem like progress.

From goalie movement to the Nashville Predators’ possible yard sale, the Seattle Kraken will plan their expansion draft around what happens at the trade deadline.
They don’t have any players. They don’t have a coach. Their arena and training facility are still being built.

But the Seattle Kraken are still invested in what happens over the next several weeks leading up to the NHL trade deadline. Here's why ⤵️https://t.co/l7PrROgluH
The presence of “Gloria” and “Chelsea Dagger” but not “Puck Off” is perhaps the second-most problematic part of this list.

What are Sickos, and why have Ottawa Senators fans put them in Canadian Tire Centre’s COVID-restricted seating? Greg Wyshynski went and found out.
There are Sickos watching @Senators games, and the team absolutely loves it.

How an Internet meme went from subversive fan rallying cry to a team-endorsed campaign that helps fight cancer. I interviewed the creator of the "Sicko" about it, too. #NHL https://t.co/0xnsDJI7i3
And while this isn’t exactly hockey-related, it’s an interesting examination of how organizers are balancing Olympic tradition with pandemic reality.
Organizers plan to exercise extreme caution when the Olympic torch relay starts next week, knowing any stumble could imperil the Tokyo Games in just over four months. Fans along the roads will be asked to cheer quietly.
