Dallas Stars Daily Links: Ty Dellandrea Will Fight To Be On Dallas’ Opening-Night Roster

The Dallas Stars’ regular season is 29 long days away – but last weekend’s Prospect Development Camp provided a tantalizing, if all too brief preview. And 2018 first-rounder Ty Dellandrea is among the players Stars fans are watching most closely, for better and otherwise.

The 21-year-old center had an up-and-down season in 2021, from making the roster in Dallas to becoming a regular healthy scratch, and finally ending up in Cedar Park for the final buzzer. He’s heading back to Dallas for training camp – and this time, he plans to stay.

The Athletic’s Saad Yousuf caught up with Dellandrea at the Stars’ facilities in Frisco, as he and his fellow prospects prepared for the annual Traverse City NHL Prospect Tournament:

Making things flow has been a theme for Dellandrea this offseason. Of all of the Stars prospects headed to Traverse City, including promising young talents such as Riley Damiani and Thomas Harley, Dellandrea is the only one who has legitimate NHL experience. His successes last year showed him glimpses of the possibilities. His struggles gave him offseason homework.

“I worked a lot on not just my strength but strength in my skating,” Dellandrea told The Athletic last week. “A lot of stuff to do with getting stronger with the puck and being able to stay in the positions where I can protect the puck and move with the puck instead of getting pinned. I’ve done a lot of work with getting my legs stronger to get stronger in my skating.”

Put an asterisk next to “skating.” Dellandrea has been putting in the same kind of work that Jason Robertson put in last year – you know, the offseason before he made a stunning breakout run in the Calder Trophy sweepstakes:

The first item on [skating coach Ashlea] Jones’ agenda for Dellandrea was to make his mobility more effortless. While Dellandrea put in the work off the ice to physically get to a point to execute it, Jones helped him understand controlling the edges.

“That’s kind of your foundation for power output and those kinds of things,” Jones said. “We did a lot of work so he understands his weight on the blades and balance points so he’s a little more solid when he’s in play. From there, we built on it.”
