Dallas Stars Daily Links: The Battle for the Final Forward Spot
Head coach Jim Montgomery talks about what he’s looking for from the bubble-forwards. Plus, Thomas Harley signs his ELC, Brayden Point re-upped with the Lightning, and more.
With three preseason games left to go, time is running out for Jim Montgomery to decide upon the Dallas Stars’ opening night roster. Most of the spots are set, but there is an opening among the forwards that is still up for debate:
“We need someone to go out and grab it, you know?” Montgomery said after Monday’s practice at Comerica Center. “Not disappointed, but not overly excited either. People gotta step up.”
So what can someone like Joel Kiviranta or Denis Gurianov do to claim that spot? It’s not just about scoring points:
“One, attention to detail and habits without the puck. That their checking skills are really good and then making plays and possessing the puck -- not throwing pucks away trying to make plays,” he said. “Possess pucks so that we can create more offense.”

After impressing coaches and management alike in training camp, Thomas Harley has now inked his ELC:

Congrats, @t_harley48! #GoStars
But if you think that means Harley might make the NHL roster... don’t get too excited:
Nill: "He's a young man he needs to play lots. Over the years being in the business the situation has shown the NHL is a tough league and it can eat you up quick, so you have to be cautious of that ... we are going to make sure he's in a situation where he plays lots."— Sean Shapiro (@seanshapiro) September 23, 2019

Not that I have anything against Eeli Tolvanen... but is it too early to admit he wasn’t a “can’t miss” draftee the Stars passed on?
