Two games to forget, but one experience to remember for a lifetime.

The Stars’ Global Series experience is officially in the books. A memorable trip that started off with Lohikeitto, beer, saunas, cold plunges and Jokerit hockey, but ended with two tough losses against the defending Stanley Cup Champions. The Stars return to Dallas pointless, however not all hope is lost given the takeaways Pete DeBoer and Matt Duchene highlight in their postgame interviews. Dallas Stars Senior Staff Writer, Mike Heika, provides us with a brief recap of both, starting with Pete DeBoer:

“It’s a good lesson for us this weekend, playing that team and seeing what you have to do to win,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said. “Those are playoff-type goals. I think they had four tips [in the two games] and a couple of faceoff goals. Those are the details that decide games come playoff time. There’s not a lot of room, not a lot of space. “They were better in those areas,” he added. “It’s a great lesson for our group.”

The Stars had a rough debut in Tampere on Friday, but had a stronger showing on Saturday despite a 3-2 loss. The Stars’ goals and points leader, Matt Duchene, provided his thoughts during his postgame interview, which also provided room for optimism:

“It was more like a playoff game, the intensity was high from the start,” Duchene said of the Stars’ mission to improve after Friday’s performance. “A nice faceoff [win] for them and a good shot, and that’s the difference. It sucks to drop two here, but we’ll get on the plane and be motivated to get back to North America and get going again.”

Following these two losses, it’s become clear what improvements are needed in order to defeat a defending champion over the course of a seven-game series. The Stars will open things back up against the Blackhawks at home on Thursday to hopefully spark some momentum before they head to Winnipeg on Saturday.
