Dallas Stars Daily Links: Ad Nauseam on Jersey Ads

In the comments of Wednesday’s links, most of you guys gave a rousing chorus of boos to the idea that ads could soon be a part of jerseys across the league. Since TSN announced the Adidas deal, plenty of people and players have sounded off on the issue.

Tyler Seguin talked with TSN about his opinion, which the Dallas Morning News transcribed. (There’s a video here, for those of you in the appropriate region.)

“I played in (Biel) Switzerland during the lockout. Our team had a lot of Skoda (a Czech auto manufacturer). My car was a Skoda and it had our team name plastered all over it. There was a number of different things (hawked on the sweater), tire companies, car stuff and some kind of lunch meat.

“I’m not really with it or against it….Ì think (ads) would grow. Personally, I’m going to do my best no matter what I’m wearing. We’ll see how the fans react to them.”

Fingers crossed for lunch meat, am I right?

The JetsBlake Wheeler felt a little more strongly than Seguin.

Meanwhile, the Leafs Nation thinks ads won’t be a problem and helpfully provided a few suggestions for which teams should get which ones.

And the folks at USA Today think the whole thing is inevitable.

It’s a nice sentiment Wheeler is expressing, but a bit naive. NHL jerseys already include a small Reebok logo and the league has agreed to test corporate advertising on jerseys at the World Cup of Hockey in September.

Plus, most NHL teams already have lucrative marketing and sponsorship deals with corporate partners that are essential to their financial well-being. Take, for example, the LA Kings relationship with McDonalds during their 2013-2014 season.

Feel free to keep the discussion going, and check out more on why we should just resign ourselves to players becoming walking, talking billboards. [USA Today]
