Dallas’ defense is currently one of the best in the league, led by one of the best defenders in the league: our own Miro Heiskanen.
It’s been quite a season for the Dallas Stars blue line, who currently own the fourth best goals-against per games played in the league (2.58) [NHL].
Miro Heiskanen and Esa Lindell have headlined this effort, with younger players such as Thomas Harley and Nils Lundkvist having a large part in it – not to mention Ilya Lyubushkin, who has been a bargain this season based on the production we have gotten from him thus far. All of these players have a +/- rating of greater than or equal to 6, showing how effective they have been on the ice.
We also can’t forget the contributions from the Stars’ top defensive prospect, Lian Bichsel, who has made his presence known in the small sample size we have seen. Based on what we’ve seen so far, Stars fans have a player to be really excited about for years to come…but for now, it’s Miro’s unit.
D Magazine’s Sean Shapiro has put together a piece covering Miro’s impact on this Dallas Stars defense. Shapiro reached out to several NHL scouts to get their take on the effect Miro has on this defensive unit. Here is what one had to say, sourced from Shapiro’s article:
““From a pure defender standpoint, I don’t think there’s a better player in the league,” one said. “Cale Makar is a better player, for example, but from defending all over and playing the actual position definition, ‘defense,’ no one in the NHL is better than Miro in my view.”
The scout added, “I remember with that defense, at the start of the year I know you and a lot of people were wondering if it was enough, and while I’d like to see them better in some areas, they were never going to be as bad as anyone worried because of him.””
You can read what other scouts had to say about Miro’s greatness in the full version of Shapiro’s article here.

NHL is back! Lots of interdivision action tonight!
- The Nashville Predators travel to St. Louis to face off against the Blues. The Predators have won three of their last four, can they keep that momentum going tonight? [ESPN]
- The Utah Hockey Club hosts the Colorado Avalanche tonight on ESPN2. The Avalanche are winners of three straight and face a Utah team that has dropped their last two. [ESPN]
- The Chicago Blackhawks are the only Central Division team (aside from the Winnipeg Jets, who have Friday off) that are not playing an opponent in their division tonight. The Blackhawks will be shaving ice with the Buffalo Sabres in the first game of a double header on ESPN2. [ESPN]
