Dallas Signs Andrej Sekera To One-Year, $1.5 Million Contract

The Dallas Stars are adding to their blue line, as they have signed former Edmonton Oilers forward Andrej Sekera to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million.

Like Corey Perry, Sekera is coming off of a buyout and is taking a low-risk “prove it” deal with Dallas. While he isn’t the top-four defenseman that many fans were hoping for, he could provide some decent depth as a sixth or seventh-position defenseman.

The main concern when it comes to Sekera is whether or not he can stay healthy. He has only played in 60 NHL games over the past two seasons, scoring 12 assists and no goals over that time frame. At 33 years old, the wear-and-tear on his body is starting to add up, and it’s not unreasonable to question if he’ll even play 20-plus games this season.

If Sekera can recover, however, then the Stars have added a third-pairing defenseman for little cost. And as with Perry, the Stars can always waive Sekera if he’s healthy but doesn’t perform up to expectations.

On the other hand…

When it comes to evaluating the signing, perhaps the best approach is simply, “wait and see.”
