Dallas Stars 2013-14 Season Grades: Colton Sceviour

Once again it's that time of year here on Defending Big D where we take a look at each player that suited up for 20 or more games this season (and finished the season with the team) - and take a look back at their season. What was good about it, what wasn't so good, and the lasting impression they left us as we go into summer.

Key Stat: 11th

Colton Sceviour was 11th on the Stars in goals despite playing in only 26 NHL games. Sceviour was 2nd in the AHL in goals despite only getting into 54 games. He scored 32 goals in those games. You could say he had a pretty good goal scoring run.

The Good:

Sceviour thrived in his first taste of NHL action. The Stars previously thought he was a bit of a tweener. He wasn't going to be good enough offensively to merit top line minutes, yet he wasn't going to be good enough defensively to fit in with a bottom six role.

That very well could still be the case, but he didn't look like a butcher defensively in his NHL time in 2014. Lindy Ruff routinely started his fourth line in the defensive zone against weak competition so it would be disingenuous to say he is a good defensive player. But, he was essentially a 50% Corsi player. Sceviour was really a perfect fit for that type of role.

Get the puck out, generate some offense, and bury some chances. That's Sceviour in a nut shell.

The Bad:

He's old.

On April 20th Sceviour turned 25. He isn't a prospect. If he wants to carve out an NHL career he can't afford to falter. He was terrific in the AHL, and he played well in a quarter of an NHL season. Can the Stars count on him to keep it up next year?

Bottom Line:

Sceviour's production was found money for the Stars. They double checked a lotto ticket they threw on the floorboard of their car to find that it was a five dollar winner. It improved their day a little but, but it wasn't a life altering revelation.

If he becomes more than a bottom line contributor for the Stars they will be thrilled, but they can't count on it. Ultimately, for what he was asked to do, he had a really solid year.
