The Dallas Stars have had their share of trouble this season, but the chronic gametime-decision status of Roope Hintz has been one of the bigger issues. Somehow, even as he and the team try to manage a troubling lower-body injury, the 24-year-old forward manages to produce every time he’s on the ice.
And his teammates and head coach Rick Bowness have noticed, as Stars senior staff writer Mike Heika notes in his latest roundup:
“He’s a tough kid,” said forward Andrew Cogliano. “He’s one of those Finnish kids. They work hard, they play hard, and he’s one of those guys. It’s commendable to him. It speaks to the character and who he is as a person and a player.”...
“It’s clear he is such a great impact player for us when he is in the lineup,” Bowness said. “He is such a great player and great skater and when he is not in our lineup, you notice it. And when he wasn’t in our lineup tonight for a little bit, we noticed it. I was certainly holding my breath when I saw him go down.”
But Bowness’ recent non-use of Denis Gurianov is drawing questions, especially when Guri’s stunning one-timer might have helped the Stars tie up Tuesday’s game during the 5-on-3:
Asked if using Gurianov in that situation could help spark him and get him out of his slump, Bowness said coaches make decisions based on who they believe will help the team succeed.
“He’s got to get himself going, too, a little bit here, right? He’s a pro. It’s a man’s league,” Bowness said.

Speaking of young guns who are taking on big roles, Saad Yousuf gives you Jake Oettinger.
“Both Khudobin and (Bishop), they’ve been absolutely outstanding with this kid.”— Saad Yousuf (@SaadYousuf126) March 25, 2021
Talked to Stars goalie coach Jeff Reese about Jake Oettinger’s success. A strong goalie room & a hungry rookie have played a huge role.
“He’s a sponge. It’s amazing to me.”https://t.co/Pq5iquNIfA
It’s game day, with the Tampa Bay Lightning, again. Here’s how to follow it.
Sean Shapiro still writes about the Stars from time to time – and this story, about how Mike Modano became forever known as North Star Player No. 2, is a doozy.
In 1992 Mike Modano and Basil McRae walked into the Met Center for different type of work during an NHL strike. How that Mighty Ducks cameo left both with SAG vouchers, it’s cultural impact, & how it cost Modano money whenever the Stars would play Anaheim https://t.co/kgnvHuqvDr— Sean Shapiro (@seanshapiro) March 25, 2021

“At least we’re better than the Buffalo Sabres” may be cold comfort, but seriously, that team is really snakebit. Neil Paine takes a long look at the numbers behind their historic skid.

Meanwhile, back among the Stars’ #MurderDeathKill-mates, Andrew Copp just had himself a game for the Winnipeg Jets.
The trade deadline is still just sitting there. David Satriano looks at players who could be on the move even earlier, from Jack Eichel to Anthony Mantha.
The NHL Trade Deadline is at 3 p.m. ET on April 12. Here are some players who could be moved before the deadline:https://t.co/lvENiBZwJH— NHL.com (@NHLdotcom) March 25, 2021
Sad news: Bob Plager, one of the original St. Louis Blues, was killed in a car crash yesterday. He was 78.

Rob Pizzo collects some hockey’s best cellies – but fair warning, you’ll have to FF through Sean Avery to get to Teemu Selanne and Tiger Williams. Enjoy.
